Intellectual Property Engineer – Patent Research Specialist
Job Description
• Conduct comprehensive patent searches, including:
• Patentability (novelty) searches to determine if inventions meet the criteria for patent protection
• Freedom-to-operate (FTO) / clearance searches to identify potential infringement risks before product launch
• Invalidity/validity searches to challenge or defend patent rights during disputes
• Patent landscape searches to map technology trends and competitor activity
• State-of-the-art searches for technology scoping and innovation analysis
• Patent watch and monitoring to track new filings, competitor activity, and legal status updates
• Utilize a wide range of global patent databases and tools, including:
• Clarivate (Derwent Innovation), USPTO, Espacenet (EPO), CNIPA, J-PlatPat, and other jurisdiction-specific search platforms
• Analyze technical disclosures and legal claims to identify overlaps, similarities, and potential conflicts
• Prepare clear and comprehensive search reports, presenting findings, risk assessments, and recommendations for internal and legal stakeholders
• Collaborate with R&D teams, patent attorneys, and corporate legal departments to support IP strategy and decision-making
• Support IP due diligence for product development, licensing, acquisitions, or investment reviews
• Provide technical input for patent drafting, prosecution, opposition, and litigation support
• Stay updated on international IP laws, database tools, classification systems, and emerging technologies
• Maintain well-organized internal records, classification data, and search documentation to ensure IP data integrity
